At Home Whitening
At St Margarets Smiles, we’ve partnered with Boutique Whitening to offer our patients reliable home-based teeth whitening treatments.
What is Boutique Whitening?
Boutique Whitening is a home-based teeth whitening system that lets patients whiten and brighten their teeth from the comfort of their own home. Flexible and easy to use, patients will see results within two weeks by wearing their whitening trays for a few hours a day or overnight.
How does Boutique Whitening work?
First, you’ll visit our practice to have an oral health checkup, have impressions taken and be fitted for your custom whitening trays. Created for you by our Dental lab, these trays ensure a comfortable fit for at-home use. Once your trays are ready we provide test fitment, you can start using them immediately with the Boutique Whitening formula at home.
How does it work ?
Teeth whitening trays and gels provide an effective method for brightening your smile.
Here’s how they work:
First, a custom-fitted tray snugly covers your teeth. This tray is then filled with a specialised whitening gel containing peroxide. The concentration of peroxide determines the duration you’ll need to wear the tray—ranging from a few hours during the day to overnight use.
Over time, which can span from just a few days to a couple of weeks, the peroxide in the gel penetrates the enamel. It breaks down stains and discoloration, leading to gradually whiter teeth. This process is both safe and efficient when used as directed.
Teeth whitening with a Hygienist
Our hygienists offer GBT Airflow teeth polishing, the latest technology for removing surface stains, helping you achieve a sparkling smile. This innovative dental cleaning method effectively tackles persistent stains caused by food, drink, or smoking, leaving your mouth feeling cleaner and fresher.
GBT Airflow combines three essential elements, air, bio-particles, and water to deliver outstanding results without damaging your teeth. This process not only removes discoloration but also revitalises your smile in a single session.
The powerful yet gentle jet of the GBT Airflow is a significant upgrade from the standard scale and polish session. It provides a thorough clean with a cosmetic touch, removing stubborn stains and revealing your natural, whiter, and brighter smile.

What are the risks of over the counter or DIY teeth whitening treatments ?
Using over the counter whitening kits can come with several risks that you should be aware of. First, these kits often include a generic-sized tray, which does not fit your mouth perfectly. This improper fit can cause the bleaching agent to leak out and come into contact with your gums, leading to irritation or other adverse effects.
Teeth whitening toothpaste contains abrasives rather than aiming to break down the stains they wear down the tooth. Overall these treatments are not as effective or as long lasting as professional teeth whitening.
Additionally, if you have ongoing dental issues like tooth decay, receding gums, or gum disease, using whitening products could make your teeth more sensitive. It’s also important to note that whitening agents do not work on ceramic or porcelain crowns and veneers. This means that your dental work might remain a different colour compared to your natural teeth, resulting in an uneven appearance.
Lastly, if you have crowns or other dental restorations, it’s essential to consult a dentist before proceeding with any whitening treatment. Whitening products are not suitable for all dental conditions, and using them without professional guidance could potentially cause harm to your oral health.
Can Everyone Have Teeth Whitening?
Before diving into teeth whitening, certain dental issues must be resolved to ensure the process is both safe and effective. Patients must be over 18 for gel based whitening.
Cavities: Any existing cavities require treatment first. Whitening solutions can seep through decayed areas, potentially reaching the inner tooth, which can cause discomfort and further damage.
Receding Gums: If your gums have receded, the exposed roots of your teeth might appear yellow or discoloured. Teeth whitening products won’t affect these roots, leaving them unchanged and potentially making the contrast more noticeable.
Tooth Sensitivity: People with tooth decay or gum recession may experience increased sensitivity after whitening treatments. Addressing these issues beforehand can help prevent discomfort.
Restorative Work: Whitening products do not work on dental restorations like ceramic crowns or porcelain veneers. If you have such restorations, consult your dentist to discuss alternative whitening options.
By addressing these problems first, you can achieve better, more consistent results from your teeth whitening treatment and improve your oral health.
What are the Benefits of Teeth Whitening Treatment?
Teeth whitening treatment offers a multitude of benefits that extend beyond just achieving a brighter smile.
Firstly, it significantly enhances your overall appearance by giving you whiter, more dazzling teeth. It can boost your self-confidence and positively impact your self-image.
Secondly, the treatment is incredibly efficient. With just one pain-free session, typically lasting about an hour, you can see your teeth become up to eight shades whiter. This means you can get noticeable results quickly without disrupting your busy schedule.
Finally, whiter teeth can also improve the impressions you make on others. Whether in social settings or professional environments, a radiant smile can help you appear more approachable and confident, making a lasting positive impression.
