Composite bonding is a beautifully simple way to make small but meaningful changes to your smile. Using a tooth-coloured resin, your dentist gently sculpts and shapes the material onto the surface of your tooth - smoothing out chips, building up worn edges, closing small gaps and reshaping teeth that look uneven. Preparing your teeth
Bonding is wonderfully gentle - usually no drilling is needed. Your dentist will lightly clean and prepare the surface of your teeth so the composite resin bonds beautifully.
Sculpting your new smile
The tooth-coloured resin is layered onto your teeth and shaped by hand to create the finish you've planned together. A special light is used to harden the material into place.

How long does composite bonding last?
With good care, composite bonding typically lasts between 5 and 7 years, though many patients enjoy theirs for longer. Avoiding habits like nail-biting, biting on pen lids and chewing ice will help keep it looking its best, and we'll see you at your regular check-ups to monitor how it's wearing.
Will composite bonding damage my teeth?
No - that's one of the loveliest things about it. Bonding is what we call a "minimally invasive" treatment, which means we usually don't need to remove any of your natural tooth to do it. If you ever wanted to reverse it in the future, you could.
Will my bonding stain over time?
Composite resin can pick up some staining over time, particularly if you drink a lot of red wine, coffee or tea. Regular hygiene appointments and good brushing habits go a long way to keeping it looking fresh, and minor stains can usually be polished away.
Composite bonding or porcelain veneers - which is better for me?
Both can deliver beautiful results, but they suit different needs. Composite bonding is quicker, gentler and more affordable, while porcelain veneers are more hard-wearing and stain-resistant but involve a little more preparation of the tooth. We'll talk through both options at your consultation so you can make the right choice for you.
Do you accept cosmetic patients from outside St Margarets?

Can I combine composite bonding with whitening?
Absolutely - in fact, many patients do. Because composite resin is colour-matched to your existing teeth, we usually recommend whitening your teeth first if you're planning to do both. That way your bonding can be matched to your brighter shade.
How do I look after my bonding at home?
Just like your natural teeth, really. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with your regular check-ups and hygiene appointments. We'll also recommend avoiding habits that put unusual stress on your front teeth, like opening packaging with your teeth or chewing ice.
