What is a dental check-up?
A dental check-up is a routine appointment with your dentist, usually every six to twelve months, where we carry out a full assessment of your teeth, gums, bite and the soft tissues of your mouth. It's the foundation of good dental care - the simplest, most effective way to keep your mouth healthy and avoid bigger, more expensive problems down the line.
We don't just look at your teeth, either. A check-up at St Margarets Smiles includes a careful look at your gums (where many problems start), your bite, your jaw and the soft tissues of your mouth - including a quick check for any signs of oral cancer. It's quick, it's gentle, and it gives you a really clear picture of where your oral health stands.

What happens during your dental check-up?
A friendly catch-up
Your dentist will start with a short chat about how you've been getting on since your last visit - any sensitivity, sore spots, changes in your mouth or general dental concerns you'd like to mention.
Examining your teeth
Your dentist will carefully check each tooth for signs of decay, wear, cracks or other issues. They'll also check any existing fillings, crowns or other dental work to make sure everything's still in good condition.
Checking your gums and soft tissues
A healthy mouth depends on healthy gums, so your dentist will carefully assess the condition of your gums and check for any signs of gum disease. They'll also examine the soft tissues - your tongue, cheeks, palate and the floor of your mouth - including a brief check for any signs of oral cancer.
Assessing your bite
Once the canals are clean and shaped, they're filled with a specialised material that seals the tooth from further infection. A temporary filling is placed on top to protect the tooth while it settles.
X-rays, if needed
Sometimes we'll recommend an x-ray to spot anything that isn't visible to the naked eye, particularly between the teeth or below the gum line. X-rays are charged separately from £10.

If your dentist spots something that needs treatment, they'll explain everything clearly and provide a written treatment plan with all costs listed up front. You'll have time to think things over before deciding what to do next - there's never any pressure to start treatment on the day.
Can I bring my children to their check-up at the same time as mine?
Yes, we love family appointments - it's often easier for busy parents to bring everyone in together. Just let us know when you book and we'll do our best to arrange back-to-back appointments. We're particularly mindful of making children's check-ups feel positive and stress-free.
What's the difference between a check-up and a hygiene appointment?
A check-up is carried out by your dentist and focuses on assessing your overall oral health and spotting any problems. A hygiene appointment is carried out by your hygienist and focuses on professional cleaning to keep your gums healthy. Most patients have both regularly.
