Porcelain veneers explained, in plain English

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells of high-quality ceramic that are bonded to the front surfaces of your teeth to change their shape, colour or alignment. Think of them as a beautifully made, custom cover that gives you a refreshed, natural-looking smile built to last.

Veneers are the treatment of choice when you're after a really polished, lasting result - perhaps for a wedding, a milestone birthday, or just because you've finally decided to do something for yourself. They're a bigger commitment than composite bonding, but the results are stronger, more stain-resistant and beautifully precise. Many of our Twickenham patients combine veneers with other cosmetic treatments as part of a complete smile transformation.

What to expect with porcelain veneers

Your cosmetic consultation

We'll start with an unhurried chat about what you'd like to achieve. Your dentist will examine your teeth, talk through whether veneers are the right option, and explain alternatives like bonding so you can make a properly informed choice.

Smile design

Together we'll plan exactly how you'd like your new smile to look - the shape, length, colour and finish. For some patients we'll create a smile preview so you can see and feel your potential new smile before any treatment begins.

Preparing your teeth

A small amount of enamel is gently shaped from the front of each tooth to make room for the veneer. We'll take detailed scans or impressions, and you'll wear temporary veneers while your final ones are being hand-crafted.

Crafting your veneers

Your veneers are made by a skilled UK dental laboratory using high-quality porcelain. This part takes a couple of weeks - genuinely worth the wait for the level of artistry involved.

Fitting your new smile

At your fit appointment, we'll carefully bond each veneer into place, check the bite, and polish everything to a beautiful natural shine. Most patients find this part genuinely emotional - it's a real "wow" moment.

Aftercare and follow-up

We'll show you how to care for your veneers and see you for a follow-up appointment to make sure everything feels comfortable. With good care and regular check-ups, your veneers should give you many happy years.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, porcelain veneers typically last between 10 and 15 years - and often longer. They're more durable and stain-resistant than composite bonding, making them a beautiful long-term investment in your smile.

Will porcelain veneers look natural?

Yes, when designed and crafted well. Modern porcelain has lovely light-reflecting qualities that mimic natural enamel, and we work with skilled dental ceramicists who can match the colour, shape and translucency of your existing teeth. Our philosophy is always natural-looking results - never the overly white, overdone look unless that's specifically what you're after.

Do veneers damage your teeth?

A small amount of enamel is gently shaped to make room for each veneer, so the process isn't fully reversible. This is why your consultation is so important - we'll talk you through exactly what's involved and explore minimally invasive alternatives like composite bonding if they'd be a better fit for you.

Can I have just one veneer?

Yes, you can. Many patients have a single veneer to repair a damaged tooth or improve the appearance of one tooth that doesn't quite match. Matching a single veneer to your existing teeth takes real skill, and Paramjit's experience with biomimetic dentistry is particularly helpful here.

Do you offer composite veneers as well as porcelain?

We focus on porcelain veneers, but we do offer composite bonding, which can be used to create composite veneers as a more affordable alternative. We'll talk through both at your consultation so you can decide what's best for you.

How do I look after my new veneers?

Brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with your regular check-ups and hygiene appointments. Avoid using your front teeth as tools for opening packets or biting hard objects, and tell your dentist if you grind your teeth at night - we can make a protective night guard if needed.

Do you accept cosmetic patients from outside St Margarets?

Yes, we welcome cosmetic patients from across the TW1 postcode and the wider Richmond upon Thames borough, including East Twickenham, Isleworth, Whitton and Strawberry Hill. The practice is a short walk from St Margarets train station with pay-and-display parking directly outside.
