What to expect on the day of your extraction
Your assessment and treatment plan
We'll start with a careful examination of the affected tooth, including any necessary x-rays. Your dentist will explain why extraction is being recommended, talk through any alternatives (if there are any), and provide a clear written treatment plan.
The day of your extraction
On the day, your dentist will gently numb the area around the tooth with local anaesthetic so you won't feel any sharp pain during the procedure. Most extractions take only a few minutes, though more complex cases may take a little longer.
The extraction itself
Using gentle, careful technique, your dentist will ease the tooth out of its socket. You'll feel some pressure but no sharp pain. We'll talk you through what we're doing as we go, and there are simple signals you can use if you'd like us to pause.
Immediate aftercare
We'll place a small piece of gauze over the socket to help a blood clot form and protect the healing site. We'll then give you clear written aftercare instructions, including what to eat and drink, how to care for the area at home, and what to expect over the next few days.
Follow-up and replacement options
Most patients heal well within a week or two. We'll follow up to make sure everything's settling nicely, and if you'd like to discuss replacement options like dental implants or dentures, we'll book you in to chat through what would suit you best.

Will the extraction hurt?
No - the area around the tooth is fully numbed with local anaesthetic before the extraction, so you won't feel any sharp pain. You'll feel some pressure as your dentist gently eases the tooth out, but most patients are pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the procedure is overall.
How long does an extraction take?
Most simple extractions take just a few minutes once you're fully numb. More complex cases - particularly impacted wisdom teeth - can take longer. Your dentist will give you a clear time estimate at your consultation so you know what to expect.
What happens if I need a wisdom tooth removed?
It depends on the position and condition of the tooth. Straightforward upper wisdom teeth can often be extracted at the practice. For impacted wisdom teeth that require surgical removal, we'll refer you to our sister practice Richmond Hill Dental, where Dr Arjinder Chohan provides oral surgery alongside his implant work.
How long does it take to heal after an extraction?
Most patients feel back to normal within a few days, though full healing of the gum and bone takes several weeks. We'll give you clear written aftercare instructions to help your recovery go as smoothly as possible.
Can I drive home after an extraction?
Yes, if you've only had local anaesthetic (which is the case for most extractions). If you've had sedation or a more complex surgical procedure, you'll need to arrange a lift home and shouldn't drive for the rest of the day.
Should I replace the missing tooth?
It depends on which tooth has been removed. Front and visible teeth are usually replaced for cosmetic reasons, while back teeth are often replaced to maintain your bite and stop neighbouring teeth from drifting. We'll talk through your options - which may include dental implants or dentures - at your follow-up.
